Red packets — hongbao — are how Chinese families have, for at least a thousand years, made the lunar new year personal. You give one to a child to wish them a year of growth. To a parent, for thanks. To a colleague or a beloved, for the year you hope they have. The amount inside matters less than the wish; the design of the envelope is the wish made visible.

This year's design carries the Dragon Gate (鯉魚跳龍門) — the legend of the Yellow River carp who swam upstream against the current and, on reaching the gate, leapt and was transformed. It became the Confucian metaphor for any candidate facing an impossible exam, and any of us facing a year that asks more than we are ready for. To pass a Dragon Gate envelope is to say: I think you can do it.
